When people think of the Philippines, they often picture tropical paradises with white-sand beaches and endless islands perfect for relaxation. But the Philippines is much more than just a beach lover’s dream. A recent trip to Mt. Napulak and Mt. Taripis revealed that this country is also a haven for adventure seekers and outdoor enthusiasts, offering experiences that raise your pulse and leave you craving more!

As someone who’s been around the block a few times—having trekked up volcanoes, navigated tropical jungles, camped in deserts, hiked in the Alps, and faced altitude sickness in the Himalayas—I like to think I’ve earned a few adventure badges. So, when I was given the chance to explore a different side of the Philippines, one that promised to put the “fun” in “adventure,” I couldn’t resist.
Discovering the Untamed Beauty of Mt. Napulak and Mt. Taripis
Unlike the typical tourist trail focused on beaches and islands, this journey took me inland to the rugged terrains of Mt. Napulak and Mt. Taripis. These mountains aren’t just peaks to conquer; they are nature’s playgrounds, offering a mix of thrilling climbs, lush forests, and breathtaking views that are well worth the sweat and effort.
Mt. Napulak in Igbaras, Iloilo, Philippines, standing tall at 1,642 meters, is known for its unique rock formations and panoramic views of the surrounding valleys. The trail to the summit is a mix of challenging inclines and rewarding plateaus, making it a must-do for both novice and experienced hikers. The mountain is also home to a variety of flora and fauna, adding a touch of biodiversity to your adventure.
On the other hand, Mt. Taripis also in Igbaras, Iloilo, Philippines is slightly less imposing at 1,357 meters but offers a different kind of challenge. The trail is steeper and more rugged, perfect for those who love a bit of a scramble. As you make your way up, the landscape transitions from dense forests to grassy slopes, and the views from the top are nothing short of spectacular. The sense of achievement when you finally reach the summit is something that words can hardly describe.
An Adventure for Everyone
What makes these mountains even more special is that they cater to all types of adventurers. Whether you’re an experienced mountaineer or someone just looking to step out of your comfort zone, there’s something for everyone. The trails are well-marked, and local guides are available to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable experience.
For families or less experienced hikers, the lower slopes of Mt. Napulak offer a gentler trek with plenty of opportunities to enjoy the scenery and take in the fresh mountain air. Meanwhile, Mt. Taripis challenges those looking for a bit more of an adrenaline rush with its steep, rocky paths and the promise of stunning views at the summit.
A Thrilling Descent
One of the highlights of my adventure was the descent. After reaching the summit of Mt. Taripis, instead of hiking back down, I opted for a zip line that offered a thrilling ride over the forest canopy. The rush of wind and the sight of the landscape zipping by below was the perfect way to cap off an exhilarating day of hiking.
Why You Should Visit
Mt. Napulak and Mt. Taripis are perfect examples of the Philippines’ diverse landscape and the adventure it offers beyond the beaches. These mountains provide a blend of challenge, beauty, and fun that is hard to find elsewhere. Whether you’re looking to push your limits or simply enjoy the great outdoors, these mountains offer an unforgettable experience.
So, next time you’re planning a trip to the Philippines, don’t just stick to the beaches. Head inland and discover the thrill of adventure that awaits in the mountains. You won’t be disappointed.
